2014 Lifestyle 5k Series Wellington Waterfront Tue 11 Nov

Results

A blustery evening with a chilly wind coming straight off the central plateau.  Despite the rarity of a free race entry the uninviting weather conditions probably kept a number of potential participants away. It certainly reduced the volume of pedestrians and cyclists although some of the latter weaved through the human traffic at breakneck speed.

The fastest time of 17.39 went to Michael du Toit which I believe could be his first win since he started competing in this race away back in 2009. Second in 17.43 was Michael Hoose who I suspect could be a visitor to town. The fleetest woman was Emily Solsberg in 19.0.

2014 College League Meeting 1 Newtown Park Fri 7 Nov

Results

This is the first of 4 College League events designed principally to encourage students to have a go at athletics. This can be confirmed by the number of new faces with only a few regulars present.

Some students may also be using the event as  a means to get ready for the NZ Secondary Schools National Athletics Championship in Whanganui in early December.

The programme format for each meeting includes a mix of track of track and field events incorporating sprints, middle distance throws and jumps. The intention is to provide flexibility with the programme to offer those events each Friday that are most in demand.

For the first league the events were 100m, 400m, 1500m, Shot-Put and Long Jump. There was also a 4x100m Relay to finish off.  Because this is an after-school event the meeting is short, about 90 minutes, give or take.

The lack of electronic timing made it difficult to manage the finish line results and this is unlikely to get better as the series continues.

Commonwealth Games rep Julian Matthews didn't mess about to set a new course record

Results

Sometimes you just have to be there to witness these things. Tonight Nelsonian, Julian Matthews and 2014 Commonwealth Games 1500 representative clocked a sizzling 14.38 to take 3 seconds off the previous course record set by by Hamish Carson in 2013. This is a terrific time given the stiff breeze and normal waterfront congestion.

Second fastest was Levente (Levi) Timar who crossed the line in 16.07. This was his first appearance in this event for 2 years. Ben Tyman, multiple winner in this event, was third in a time of 16,38, a full minute down on Matthews. Ayesha Shafi was the first female home in 19.13, a PB for her I believe.

Meanwhile, David Smol the Chief Executive of the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) equaled his best time of 21.40 set in August.
