The Santa run is now a annual event organised in most major centres for the same day. The purpose of the run is to raise money for charity, in this case KidsCan. The entry fee is quite high and the proceeds would be split between KidsCan and the promoters who organise the event. There is also sponsorship from local businesses and promotion by a local radio station. Participants are provided with a red Santa suit and get to run about 2k. Not really a running event as such but it gives the Santa's something to do before they get to do their real job on Xmas Eve.
