Gale force winds made it impossible for good times or performances. The head wind on the home straight made it tough for the athletes and the expression on their faces told it all. At least the rain stayed away. There was a good turnout due in part to the presence of a large squad from Wanganui Collegiate School and other schools. It looked to me that some of the Wellington athletes were competing at Newtown Park for the first time this season. There was an especially large line-up for the 1500m races and of course the prospect of a clash between national champions Geordie Beamish and Josh Baan was always going to be interesting. Baan is the current Junior Road and XC champ not to mention 5000m track champ. Beamish is the 2014 Secondary Schools Senior Boys XC champ and Junior 1500m track champ. Beamish and Baan have gone head to head in past races, but on the day Beamish blasted to victory battling a ferocious head wind for the last 100m.
