Back on the waterfront Rowan Hooper gave himself a birthday
present with a win in a snappy 15.47. This is the season’s all-comers record.
Behind Rowan and 11
seconds back was a fit looking Chris McIlroy in 15.58.
Third home for the men
was high-schooler Logan Slee with Ben Twyman right on his shoulder. The time
for both was 16.10.
Slee (HIBS) heads off to Paris next April as part of the NZ
Secondary School’s XC team to contest the ISF World XC Champs.
Tamara Winkler was the fastest woman in 18.26, followed in 2nd
place by Melissa Black in 19.10. In 3rd was Nat Hardacker stopping
the clock at 19.33.
In the battle for supremacy between Brendon Thompson and
Will Critchlow, tonight was a rest night as Brendon was out on the course in special
headgear with pram and child, which doesn’t make it fair a fight. Next week then?
A contingent of Trentham United runners turned out tonight including
brothers Finn and Jonah Seed both age grade champions, and Michael and Daniel du
Toit. They joined Josh Jordan a regular at
this event.
I also need to mention #MadHarry’s and his barefootadventures in the ASB Auckland Marathon last weekend. This was well reported in the Auckland Herald
and in his subsequent Radio New Zealand interview with John Campbell on
Checkpoint.
Frankly I don’t know how anybody could run 1km on a hard road
surface let alone 24km. Quite astonishing.
The upshot is that #MadHarry won’t be turning up to pace the
Waterfront 5km any time soon.
