Tonight’s race was free to enter which meant there was a big
turnout. It would be nice to see the free race concept repeated before the
season ends.
Daryl used this first race for 2018 to trial his new fancy chip
recording system ostensibly in advance of the winter cross and road
season.
The setup is comprised of a mat to
protect the wiring, two small white recording devices to capture the chip
information worn by each competitor and of course a large "black box".
The rumour is that the technology is linked
to the five eyes network to enable Donald Trump to get race results quickly. While Daryl did not confirm or deny the Police presence did indicate that this installation is under high security
In the race itself #MadHarry was first home in the men’s
grade which proves he runs well in shoes.
In second place and about 50 seconds adrift was Joe Lynch who clocked
17.03. Lynch is a new comer to the waterfront race but is no stranger to racing
being the current Secondary Schools Senior Boys orienteering champion in both
the sprint and long course events.
Andy Crossland finished third with a new PB of 17.23
In the women’s grade Jean Kozyniak was 1st in 18m neat and
5th overall.
In 2nd place
but well back was Letha Whitman who recorded a PB with 19.17 which compares to
her previous best of 20.44 set exactly a year ago.
Event newcomer Dianne Smyth was 3rd in 20.34
which is a positive result for a first outing.
In the Critchlow/Thompson Challenge Will C scored another
win coming home streets ahead of Brendon T. The respective times were 17.26 (4th)
and 19.41 (18th) but no doubt the battle will continue.
