2016 CycloCross Maidstone Park Upper Hutt Sun 10 July

Results - Round 4

Huttcross Race Report - Round 4  (To come)

So what is Cyclocross? Well basically it is cross country racing on bikes on tough courses.

The event on Sunday was organised by Huttcross and comprise 3 grade races plus one for the kids.

The locations seem to vary but the basic characteristic of each course involve short sharp climbs, tight turns and the inevitable slippery bits. The Maidstone Park circuit also had an obstacle (like an XC jump/hurdle) which meant that riders had to dismount to navigate (although one rider jumped it without putting a foot on the ground). A water obstacle would make the races interesting.

Dismounting and either walking or carrying your bike is also normal in navigating certain sections of a course as this can be the most efficient way of completing the course.

Grades are based on the length of races by time, not age or gender. Thus the C Grade race last 30 minutes, B grade 45 minutes and A grade 60 minutes.

I am not sure how winners are determined although everybody starts together and presumably keep on going until the clock stops. I am not absolutely sure about this. So if you have the endurance, speed and bike skills you can compete in the long race.

It is an excellent spectator event as you can usually see the whole course from one or two places. Huttcross are organising the National Cyclocross Championship at Maidstone Park on Saturday 6 August which should be a good one.  I presume the layout of this event will take into account that fact that the ground gets badly cut-up in places and needs time to repair itself.

Dom Post Race Report

Sometimes I wonder if the organisers have bitten off more than they can chew by having so many races. Obviously the choice of distances means more entries and more revenue but for all races apart from the full and half-marathon the finish chute area can be chaotic.

Being a local body election year some mayoral candidates decided that it might be a good idea to turn up to with their supporters show the flag. Nick Leggett was one of them and Justin Lester's name was also being bandied about.  This gives new meaning to the term "running for office".

Tim Hodge winner of the Senior Men's race

Results Daryl the Dude, professional finish line technician, was in his element at Saturday's Vosseler Shield. Not one to take half measures when it comes to capturing places and times he had a box of gadgets including 5 GoPro's all set up to make sure he got the data. Two co-opted teenagers captured some "verify point times" while the reliable John Turner and Dave Gratton did the manual stuff. And it didn't rain.

Dom Post Report

"Wellington Scottish produced a clean sweep of the main races at the Vosseler Shield on Saturday as Amanda Broughton and Tim Hodge claimed the senior titles.

Broughton held a steady lead over Olympic's Jo Crawford for much of the 5-kilometre race to win in a time of 23 minutes, 23 seconds. Crawford closed strongly to finish second, just eight seconds behind, with almost a minute back to her Olympic team-mate, Lizzy Bunckenburg, in third.

Hodge won his second straight senior men's title in comfortable fashion.

His winning time off 40.45 over the 10km course was three seconds quicker than his effort to win last year.

Young Wellington Harrier Nathan Tse continued to show his strong form this year to run into second, 43 seconds behind Hodge, with Trentham's Brian Garmonsway third.

Scottish won both of the team races in those senior divisions.

In the women's under-20 race, Scottish's Jess Kikstra grabbed the closest win of the day as she beat Harrier's Kelsey Forman by just two seconds.

Those same club colours were to the fore in the men's under-20 race, with Scottish again the winner as Harry Burnard held out Rusi Jagose to win by eight seconds.

Stephen Day won the master's 40 event for Scottish, while Kapiti's Renae Creser was the winner of the women's master's 40 event."

2016 NZ Mountain Running Champs Queenstown Sat 14 May

Rusi Jagose at the University Relays

The NZ Mountain Running Champs in Queenstown was originally supposed to be all uphill, but because of the adverse weather it was changed at the last minute to make the finish safer. This meant the race was run over a circuit which included a downhill section and underfoot conditions described as wet and slippery in parts.

The course change may also have been why the most unlucky man of the day, Rusi Jagose of WHAC, went off course, possibly costing him a medal after ending up a close fourth.  Ordinarily a well-marked and marshalled course for a national event would prevent a wrong turn, but not in this case.

They were third fastest team overall and only a few seconds behind their club's senior men's team. Although 17 year old Stefan Przychodzko ran a very fast 13:14 in the Kapiti senior team.

WHAC also won the junior women's race easily, although Pheobe McKnight from Hutt Valley began the race with a very impressive 14:21 for fastest lap of the day - over half a minute faster than any of the senior women running.

Scottish won the senior men's race comfortably too, although Nathan Tse continued his strong early season form getting WHAC off an early lead with fastest equal lap (13:10).

Scottish's second lap runner, Hiro Tanimoto, was also equal fastest on the day, putting Scottish into a lead that it did not relinquish for the remainder of the race.

Only three seconds separated Scottish and WHAC senior women after three laps, but a strong final lap from Scottish's captain Amanda Broughton gave her team the win.

Sarah Gardiner, Trentham had the fastest lap of 14:59. Scottish comfortably won the master’s men's race.

Olympic continued their ongoing battle with Scottish in the masters women' race, with Michelle van Looy taking her Olympic team into the lead on the last lap. A strong last lap from WHAC's Marie O'Regan-Smith also brought her team past Scottish into second place.

Scottish, led by Peter Stevens (14:47) won the M50s race - its first win in the grade for quite some time.
