2017 Shaw Baton Relay Battle Hill Pautahanui Sat 22 April (with 2014 photos)

I wasn’t at the Shaw Baton this year but it seems that there might have been a bit of an upset in the Seniors Men’s race with WHAC taking out the honours for the first time in many years.  Good on them for doing that because in the sport of cross country running there is nothing better than competition.

So in terms of post race reporting the ANZ weekly newsletter said this:

“Wellington Harriers Senior Men won the Shaw Baton Relay for the first time since 1995 beating current National Road Relay Champions Wellington Scottish. Scottish had won the last 21 editions. Wellington and Scottish battled out the first two laps until Wellington Harriers Captain Nathan Tse pulled clear of Scottish’s Rowan Hooper on lap 3. Strong laps from Ryan McAlister and Tim Cornish made for an easy penultimate lap for Evan Cooper who savoured the victory celebrating across the line. Wellington Harriers Co-Captain Tim Cornish reported that the victory was “a true team effort with two athletes choosing to fly across the country to help break Scottish’s winning streak”. Scott Russell (Scottish) had the fastest lap of 6:12. Wellington Harriers also took line honours in the Senior Women (Andrea Peat, Alice Feslier-Holmes, Phoebe Munro, Sarah Drought), Masters Men 50+, Junior Men and Junior Women proving to be a successful afternoon. Sarah Drought had the fastest women’s lap of 7:28.”

Scottish didn’t say much and if you wanted any details you had to go to the Sunday run.  Not at my age.

Anyway I have no photos of the historic 2017 event but I have posted part of the collection from the 2014 race which I have not previously published on the blog.
